Speech at 2007 School’s Opening and Award Ceremony

各位老师、亲爱的同学们：
Fellow teachers and dear students：
今天我们在这里隆重举行吉林华桥外国语学院2007级新生开学典礼。首先让我代表全院师生，对来自全国各地1768名莘莘学子表示热烈的欢迎！对将得到表彰的同学表示衷心的祝贺！同时，向培养同学们成长、成才的中外教师表示诚挚的感谢！
We are gathered here today for the 2007 school’s opening and award ceremony. On behalf of the entire staff and students, please allow me to extend a warm welcome to the 1768 new students from all parts of the country. And to congratulate in advance those who will receive the awards. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to those Chinese teachers and international teachers for the efforts that they have devoted to all students.
我院自1995年创办以来，始终坚持先进的办学理念，端庄的办学思想，经过12年艰苦创业的历程，已经走出了一条健康、快速发展的道路。今天的华外已经成为一所以外语为主，文、经、管协调发展的多语种、多学科、多层次的应用型外国语大学，成为吉林省乃至全国培养外语人才的主要基地之一。
Since its founding in 1995, Huawai has been adhering to the advanced educational concepts and upright administration philosophy. With the twelve years of endeavor, we have stepped on a road to sound and rapid development. Huawai now has become a multi-language, multi-discipline, and multi-level university which mainly focuses on foreign languages, coordinated with liberal arts, economics, and management, and so on. Huawai has also become one of the key foreign language training bases in the province, and even the whole country.
同学们，你们选择华外，就是选择了理想，选择了成功。近年来，我院的毕业生就业率在吉林省始终名列前茅，因为我们有“一切为了学生成人、成才、成功”的办学理念；有坚持走公益性办学道路的端庄办学思想；有“知识、能力、人格”三位一体的全套人才培养方案；有“全员、全过程、全方位、全住宿”的良好的育人环境。还有一支中外结合、师德高尚的教师队伍，所以这里是中西文化合壁之桥梁，是你们成才走向世界之桥梁。
Dear students, your choice of Huawai is an equal choice of ideal and success. Employment rate of our school has been remaining ahead of many other peers in recent years. We attribute this to the advanced educational concept of “all for the students to be a complete man, a useful person, and a success in life”. Also are important the principle of a non-profit orientation, the belief of the integration of the three virtues, namely, knowledge, ability and personality, and the excellent educational environment, as well as the ideal faculty made up of Chinese and international teachers who have high professional ethics. Our school will serve as a bridge for you to succeed in life and to cross over to become an integral part of the world and to assimilate Chinese and the western cultures.
同学们，你们有幸进入大学深造，说明你们有辉煌的过去，但你们更需要的是一个辉煌的未来，进入大学仅仅是另一个更艰苦征程的开始，以后的路会更长更艰巨。为了使你们能够做一名合格的华外大学生，作为校长，在你们入学之际，我想提出几点希望。
Students, the fact that you were admitted to our institute proves that you had a splendid past. And you are slated for an even more splendid future. Entrance to our college means the start of an even harder journey. For you to become a qualified Huawai student, I would like, as your president, to make several wishes for you.
第一，希望你们志存高远，富有理想。
理想和信念是人生的精神支柱。同学们风华正茂，应该在入校伊始，就树立起远大的抱负。希望同学们，时刻铭记国家和人民的召唤，自觉地把实现个人价值和社会价值统一起来，树立正确的世界观、人生观和价值观，把自己培养成为祖国的栋梁之材，培养成为精通外语、谙熟管理、综合素质高的外语外事人才，为中华民族的伟大复兴而奋斗。
First, I hope that you will stand high and aim far, and that you will be full of ambition. As you are young, you should develop an ambition, and prepare yourself to undertake the tasks of building up the country. It is hoped that you will live up to the call of our nation and the people, integrate the social responsibility with your own fulfillment. You are hoped to establish positive world outlook, constructive attitude towards life, and values, hence, to make yourself a useful person, and a well-rounded person possessing foreign language proficiency and management skills.
第二，希望你们勤奋学习，增长才干。
时代呼唤你们要有与时俱进的学习精神，未来社会要求你们要有渊博的知识和高超的技能，经济全球化要求你们要拥有世界眼光。所以，同学们进入大学后一定要有一个明确的学习目的和奋斗目标，规划设计好大学每一阶段的学习生活，尽快调整好自己，适应新的学习环境，要发扬“自强自律、求是求新”的华外学风，逐渐形成刻苦学习、艰苦奋斗的良好风尚，实现“知识、能力、人格”的全面发展，担负起时代赋予你们的光荣而艰巨的使命。
Second, it is hoped that you work hard and increase your capacity. Times calls for your spirit to keep the pace of study. The future calls for you to extend your knowledge. Globalization calls for you to have an open mind. Therefore, you should set up a definite goal, plan well for every stage of your college life. You are expected to stick to the student motto of “Strengthen yourself. Have self-discipline. Adhere to what is right. Develop an inclination towards innovation.” You are also supposed to promote a fighting spirit and a good learning attitude, to realize all-round development of “knowledge, ability, and personality”. Thus you will be able to shoulder the social responsibilities.
第三，希望你们严于律己，陶冶情操。
同学们，你们是时代的骄子，祖国的未来，你们进入大学这所知识的神圣殿堂，要学会学习、学会做人、学会做事、学会与人相处、学会关心社会；要从尊敬师长、团结同学、爱护公物、遵守校规这些点滴小事做起，从我做起，端正自己的品行，陶冶个人的情操，培育良好的养成和礼仪。努力使自己成为一个心理健康、性格健全的人，一个德、智、体、美、劳全面发展的人，一个受社会欢迎的德育大学生。要以“今天华外培养我成才，明天我为华外增光彩”的主人翁意识，用自己的实际行动，为华外的快速发展做出贡献。
Third, it is hoped that you develop self-discipline and build your character. Dear students, once you step into this ivory tower of knowledge, you should develop good study habits, learn to deal with people fairly, do the best in your work, learn to work with others as a team, and be involved in the society’s welfare. You should start with the very tiny goals such as respecting your teachers, uniting with your classmates, caring for the school’s property, and abiding by the rules amongst other things. You shall develop good habits and good manners. Become a person physically and psychologically healthy. Become a person who has high moral, intellectual, physical, esthetical and working standards. You are expected to make contributions to the further progress of Huawai.
第四，希望你们经受风雨，砥砺意志。
12年来，华外积淀了生生不息的优良传统和深厚的文化底蕴，铸就了“会通中外，砺志敦材”的校训和“致远、务实、求精”的校风。“会通中外”就是通古博今，学贯中外；“砺志敦材”就是要夯实专业基础、磨练意志、修养修身。“致远”就是要有远大理想；“务实”就是“简单做人，踏实做事”；“求精”就是精始于细，“天下大事必从细而做”，“精”就是不求最大，但求最好，做到一流。
Fourth, it is hoped that you develop your ability to weather storms and temper your determination. During the past 12 years, Huawai has accumulated tradition and culture, and developed its principle and motto. Its principle requires one not only to promote the splendid traditional Chinese culture but also to absorb the beneficial aspects of western culture. It also demands that one lay a solid foundation, temper his determination and elevate his moral pursuit. Our school’s motto suggests that we have wide range of vision. All teachers and students are called upon to adhere to the guideline of “being upright in life, and stabilizing each step in one’s work”. Every great achievement arises out of a cumulative succession of meticulous efforts which start from an initial step.同学们都是孤身一人来到大学这个陌生的环境，生活、学习、交友各方面难免有这样那样的烦恼和困难，要敢于把“我面前有困难”变成“困难面前有我”，在四、五年的大学生活中努力锻造自己，使自己成为一个百折不挠、勇往直前的人；一个刻苦学习、勇于拼搏的人；一个面对困难、挫折永不服输的人。做传承中华民族优秀文化，博采世界各国先进文化的强人。You are all facing a brand new environment alone. You will meet all kinds of troubles and difficulties concerning your study, life and friend-making. You should be brave to tackle all the problems. You are expected to “shape” yourself and become a person with great courage, hard-working spirit, and firm will. Be a person to inherit the good tradition of our nation and to assimilate the advanced cultures of other countries.
同学们，你们已经站到了人生的崭新起点，请你们记住自己的使命和责任，用青春与汗水、知识与毅力，谱写人生最美好的篇章。亲爱的同学们，祝愿你们每一个人都能拥有一个愉快的、成功的大学生活！光辉的未来，一定属于勇敢面对世界变化的你们。

Dear students, you are now at a new starting point in your life journey. Please bear in mind your responsibilities. Your youth, efforts, knowledge, and perseverance will bring about a successful life. Dear student, I wish each of you a pleasant and fruitful college life! A bright future awaits you as you are brave to face the changes and challenges of the world.
